  • Postural problems?
  • Can’t open your mouth completely?
  • Numbness in your hands or fingers?

Common bite problems:

Do you remember that old song:
“The head bone is connected to the neck bone and the neck bone is connected to the shoulder bone …”
Well, it turns out it is true. The lower jaw, head, and neck ARE all connected. And how your teeth mesh together (your bite) will affect how the rest of your body works together. A good bite indicates good posture and muscle health. A bad bite, or one that is slightly off, can mean signs or symptoms of other health problems.

If you have any of these symptoms, you may be experiencing TMD, or 'Temporomandibular Disorder'. TMD is usually caused when the jaw, or Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is under stress from overuse, such as grinding or clenching. The TMJ can also be affected if you have worn teeth or improper chewing e.g. more side to side than a uniform up and down motion. Dr. Roubal can diagnose your problem and offers simple and effective treatments options.

Your TMJ – Where is it?
TMJ stands for “Temporomandibular joint.” This is your jaw joint. Place your finger just in front of the middle of your ear and right under your cheekbone. Now open and close your jaw. Can you feel the movement of the jaw joint against your skull? That’s your TMJ, the point where your lower jaw attaches to the skull. Because of the stress placed on the TMJ, a variety of symptoms may develop, such as headaches, tingling in your fingers and back of your hand, and pain in your neck or shoulders.

Now try this:
Place your little fingers, pads forward, in your ear canals, and pull gently forward. Open and close your teeth. Do you feel any clicking, popping or grinding

Your pain can be relieved.
Specially trained in neuromuscular dentistry, Dr. Roubal will diagnose and treat you if you are suffering from TMJ or TMD. Using treatments designed to treat your specific situation, Dr. Roubal will realign your jaw and jaw muscles to stop the pain and suffering you feel as a result of TMJ or TMD. Dr. Roubal, as a Las Vegas Institute instructor, is helping other dentists to learn neuromuscular treatment.

Dr. Roubal also provides flexible payment options so that you can have an affordable and effective treatment.

Christine:
“ I’d been living with this neck pain for years. It was time to do something about it. My friend had seen Dr. Roubal on TV helping others with the same problem. She picked up the phone and made the call for my consult. She was right. With my “balanced bite” my headaches and neck pain are gone.”

Robert:
" My wife was always saying that I kept her awake grinding my teeth. I would wake up with a sore jaw pain and headaches. Now everything feels better. I don’t grind my teeth any more, I don’t way up with a headache. Believe it or not, even my golf game has improved. I feel … healthier, younger."

Worn Teeth - Causes

  • Grinding and Clenching
The muscles in your jaw are strong enough to induce rapid tooth wear if you clench and grind your teeth.
  • Childhood Development
A number of issues can contribute to an under-formed jaw, which can lead to a misaligned bite and rapid tooth wear.

Worn Teeth - Solutions

  • Rebuilding the teeth
By using porcelain, your teeth can be heightened, widened and strengthened.
  • Orthodontics or Porcelain restorations
Facial height can be restored through orthodontics and porcelain restoration treatments.
  • Neuromuscular dentistry
Dr. Roubal can determine your proper jaw position, and then adjust it through neuromuscular dentistry.

Crooked Teeth - Causes

  • Size of teeth
Overly large or small teeth can become crowded or misaligned.
  • Bite
An overactive or misaligned bite may cause teeth to fall out of alignment.
  • Tongue habits
During childhood, tongue movement when swallowing has the power to gradually shift teeth over time.

Misaligned Bite - Causes

  • Improper tooth size
Few people have 32 natural and perfectly proportioned teeth.  An imbalanced bite may occur when tooth growth and size varies.
  • Uneven jaw or facial growth
For a uniform bite, your jaw must be in perfect proportion to your face. Even healthy teeth structure won’t guarantee a uniform bite.
  • Breathing issues
Mouth breathing as a child may affect the development of your facial bones and jaw the subtle, but abnormal contractions in your muscles can slowly deform these bones.
  • Loss of teeth
A uniform bite requires an even number of teeth working together. A missing tooth, due to trauma or poor oral hygiene can suddenly throw this balance off.

Short Lower Third of the Face - Causes

  • Poor jaw development
  • Excessive tooth wear caused by grinding and clenching teeth
  • Overbite caused by a short lower jaw allowing the upper teeth to grow over the lower teeth.

TMD - symptoms

  • Gum Recession - Grinding and clenching your teeth creates force, which transmitted through your tooth may cause gum recession.
  • Ear Problems - Inflammation in the joint can affect the middle and inner ear because of the position of the jaw joint.
If the eustation tube, which balances pressure in the ear, runs through a muscle that is in spasm, this can lead to a blockage.  This may result in dizziness, ear congestion or stuffiness.
  • Joint Pain - The joint can become inflamed because your jaw joint is pushed out of place by incorrect jaw movement. (Pain can indicate joint disease.)
  • Neck Pain - Stiff neck, Upper back pain, Numbness of finger tips
  • Jaw Clicking - Stretching or damage to ligaments in joint can cause joint clicking, which  progresses over time with increased damage to joint. May lead to increased muscle activity as you adopt new movements to prevent clicking.
  • Poor Posture - Lack of support in bite, which may lead to upper back strain.
  • Wear on teeth - Constant desire to position the lower jaw where the muscles and joint are comfortable instead of where the teeth naturally mesh may create excessive wear on teeth. Grinding means you are trying to move the jaw to a more comfortable position. Clenching indicates you are bracing to help relieve the strain of muscle spasm.

TMD - causes

  • Childhood Development - There are a number of childhood issues that can cause TMD: Bottle fed babies may have different jaw development than breast fed babies.
Allergies and congested nasal passages can result in excessive mouth breathing,
    leading to improper jaw development.
  • Large tonsils and/or adenoids restrict normal breathing and can change jaw development. Large tonsils can force the tongue forward resulting in improper jaw development.
  • Missing Teeth - Changes in tooth position can impact your bite and create TMD changes caused by dentistry.
  • Dentistry - A new filling or crown may change your bite in a minor way and lead to TMD. In some cases straightening teeth may lead to TMD issues.
  • Genetics - You may have been born with insufficient room in the jaw for your teeth.

TMD - treatments

  • Diagnosis - Analysis of jaw muscle activity. Study jaw movement. Monitoring jaw joint sounds.
  • Therapy - Dr. Roubal can design a clear orthotic that will mimic your teeth in a correct position. Your jaw posture will be corrected so that your muscles can function without strain and spasm.
  • Treatments - Orthodontics to obtain a stable bite. Restorations of damaged teeth to move jaw posture to a neutral, relaxed position. Bite adjustment if discrepancy is small.
